It is important because harvest is a big part of Esperanza's life. In Mexico, Esperanza lived on a ranch and right after harvest a fiesta would be thrown in honor of her birthday. Her Papa loved his ranch and harvest reminds her of him. Also, in California, Esperanza has to work with fruits and vegetables again.
